Five Questions to Ask Before Designing Your Yard

Garages and sheds

Decorating your backyard is a big job. While it’s not as visible as the front yard, it’s still one of those things that you want done right otherwise you just can’t feel good about your home. There’s so many choices for different things that you could do from vinyl sheds to custom gazebos or handmade furniture. Here are a few things that you can decide on in order to narrow down your choices a little bit and not feel so overwhelmed at the prospect of doing your yard.

Do you want grass?
Figuring out if you want grass or not will let you know the type of yard you want straight off. Grass is usually the focal point when you have it but it also requires watering, which costs money and maintenance. The following questions will help you to decide if you actually want grass or you just like the idea of it. There are also different types of grass that you could look into if you don’t mind the different textures and feels of them.

How much maintenance are you willing to do?
This is a big one. If you don’t want to do any maintenance then you are either going to have to hire someone to take care of your yard for you, once it’s done or you are going to need a yard that doesn’t have any grass, plants, flowers or foliage of any kind. You could do this by setting up vinyl sheds or custom pergolas with no climbing vines or anything like that. You can still have a very beautiful yard without having to do any regular maintenance.

What is your budget?
This is the number one deciding factor when designing a yard. The amount that you are willing to spend will determine the types of things you put in your yard. You need to set a budget not only for the initial designing and modelling but also for the monthly maintenance if there is any. This could be how much you are willing to pay someone or how much you are willing to invest monthly in order to keep your yard looking like it did when you first set it up.

Are you doing this yourself or hiring professionals?
Doing this yourself could limit you on the types of things that you can do. While you might be fine setting up vinyl sheds, designing custom patio furniture might just be out of your league. However, if you decide to hire professionals, while you might have to spend a little more money, it will probably be worth it you have more elaborate ideas that you’d like put in to place. If your ideas are more simple and you do think you could do it yourself, you’ll probably save a lot of money by not hiring someone to do it for you.

Where do you buy the things you want?
Knowing where to buy all of the things you need, like vinyl sheds and custom furniture is important to know before you get started. You’ll need to do a little research to find out where you can get the best quality for your money. You can’t always go with the cheapest places. Just because they are the cheapest doesn’t mean you’ll get the best value for you money. You get what you pay for so be careful when it comes to buying things just because they are cheap. If you want a little better quality then you might have to spend a little more. However, keep in mind that it will pay for itself in the end because of how long it will last.

These five questions will help you to determine the type of yard that you want before you even get started. If you don’t know where to even start, then sit down and write out the answers to these questions and that will give you a starting point as well as a finishing point and it will be a lot easier to cover the in between. You could have the greatest design ideas but if you aren’t sure how to go about it, then your yard will remain a dirt lot.
